An Interview with Xander Prince
What made you want to perform for the Berea Royalty Pageant?
I had always wanted to dip my toes in the pageant scene to see what I could pull off. I wanted to bring my talents to a city I lived in for a year and a city I fell in love with!
What’s your number one makeup or costuming tip for upcoming performers?
Thrifting is key! You can find incredible costume pieces from thrift stores and diy everything yourself because drag is art!
What (or who?) inspired you to try drag for the first time?
The movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show really opened my eyes to the art of drag and self expression, and I wanted to be dressed just the same.
What does drag mean to you as a performer?
Drag means coming together as a community to spread love and light to the queer and ally community because we’ve fought so hard for our rights, and we continue to fight to be our genuine selves. Drag is a protest against social norms.
How did you pick your drag name and build your persona? (this question was answered under a previous stagename)
I chose the name “Rocky” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and “Sixx” from one of my favorite guitarists, Nikki Sixx, from the band Mötley Crüe.
What’s been your most embarrassing moment? And what’s been your most empowering?
My most embarrassing moment was having the heels I was wearing slip off my toes and the straps on the heels got stuck mid-performance and had to finish my number with my heels dangling from my ankles.
My most empowering moment was being told I’m a role model for the future generations of queer activists through my protest performances.
How can communities better support and understand the art of drag, in your opinion?
Learning to love is the biggest support in this world full of hate. The art of drag has always been around in movies, tv shows, and media.
